Why Ken Wilber is Wrong About the Emerging Systems Paradigm

Ken Wilber makes strong claims about the emerging systems paradigm. Why they are wrong.

Integral Theory and The Systems Paradigm

Ken Wilber's Integral Theory underscores the necessity of both external, objective knowledge and internal, subjective experiential understanding for a comprehensive grasp of reality. It further suggests that our psychological wholeness—or its absence—actively shapes the reality we co-create (Wilber, 2024). This perspective is compellingly articulated by Frank et al (2024), who highlight the blind spot of modern science: its exclusion of human lived experience, a consequence of its own metaphysical worldview, which it has ceased to recognize.

Wilber integrates these positions into four quadrants (fig 1)

Meanwhile, the emerging systems paradigm, as described by Capra (2014), signals a profound and systemic paradigm shift within both science and society, one that presents life as a complex, interconnected web of relationships, emphasising that biological, cognitive, social, and ecological systems are deeply interdependent and must be understood holistically. The systems paradigm has given rise to both systems science and systems thinking.

Wilber identifies six to eight stages of human development with two tiers: those in the first tier believe their worldview is the only correct one and struggle to recognize other perspectives in themselves or others. Individuals and groups at second tier stages are able to see the other stages as a growth holarchy that needs to be integrated and healed (Wilber, 2024).

Wilbers Critique of the Systems Paradigm

In his latest book, Finding Radical Wholeness (Wilber, 2024) Wilber relegates the systems paradigm—and what he broadly refers to as “systems theory”—to the Lower Right quadrant (exterior collective), firmly rooted in the first tier. He characterizes it as being “at war” with the Upper Right quadrant (exterior singular), framing a battle between holism and reductionism. In Chapter 14, The Nightmare of Modernity – Atomism versus Systems Theory, he argues that systems theory “doesn’t even pretend to deal with the phenomenal realities of beauty, morals, love, goodness, value, or first-person consciousness as first person” (Wilber, 2024, p. 337).

By conflating general systems theory, systems science, and systems thinking into a singular 'systems theory,' Wilber oversimplifies the paradigm. While systems science often aligns with the objective framework of modern science (right-hand quadrants), it actually transcends the holism-reductionism dualism, treating them as complementary perspectives. This ‘transcend-and-include’ mindset reflects second-tier integral thinking.

Moreover, systems thinking has evolved far beyond right hand quadrant only framing. Practitioners addressing real-world, messy problems—the “swampy lowlands” (Schön, 1983)—have demonstrated its applicability across all quadrants. Approaches like Soft Systems Methodology, Critical Systems Heuristics, and Systemic Inquiry actively engage with subjective and intersubjective realities, refuting Wilber’s rigid quadrant assignment.

However, as we examine systems traditions, it becomes clear that his framing does not accurately capture the depth and applicability of the systems paradigm.

The Traditions of Systems Thinking and the AQAL Quadrants

System Dynamics

Quantitative System Dynamics is often equated solely with systems thinking, and indeed in that form is often used to model systems from a right hand collective exterior quadrant. But it can be used to qualitatively model interior subjective dynamics.

Soft Systems Methodology (SSM)

Peter Checkland’s SSM (Reynolds, 2020) moves beyond positivist approaches. Inspired by Husserl’s phenomenology, SSM includes the collective Interior quadrant, tackling shared values, worldviews, and stakeholder perspectives, alongside the collective exterior quadrant. 

Crucially, SSM also integrates the individual interior quadrant by exploring stakeholders' individual perspectives, emphasizing the importance of “seeing the world through their eyes.” By accommodating multiple viewpoints, SSM embodies the second-tier integral ethos—more perspectives equal more truth—to create a deeply integrative framework. 

Critical Systems Heuristics (CSH)  

Werner Ulrich’s CSH (Reynolds, 2020) introduces boundary critique which aims to  consciously bring into awareness the placement of system boundaries thus avoiding the exclusion or misrepresentation of stakeholders affected by interventions. Unchecked boundaries risk perpetuating injustices and ignoring marginalized voices. 

Wilber argues that Western philosophy is dominated by scientific materialism, prioritizing objective reality (Right-hand quadrants) as the sole path to knowledge (Wilber, 2024, p. 323). Yet, CSH challenges this reductionist view, drawing from Habermas’s Critical Theory and engaging both collective Interior and collective exterior quadrants of Integral Theory.

The Viable Systems Model (VSM)  

The VSM (Reynolds, 2020), models organisations as nested fractal living systems that need control metasystems to be agile and adaptable. System 1: operations correspond to observable actions and behaviours and maps to collective exterior if modelling an organisational group or individual exterior if the modelling an individual. Likewise system 2 & 3 coordination and control can map to collective exterior or individual exterior, System 4 intelligence relates to shared meaning and strategic foresight can map to lower left collective-interior or individual interior and system 5 which aligns with identity and culture can map to collective interior or individual interior. 

Systemic Inquiry and Critical Social Learning Systems  

Systemic Inquiry, as detailed by Ison (2017) in Systems Practice: How to Act, builds on the ground-breaking work of Maturana and Varela (Capra, 2014), emphasizing second-order and higher-order learning in systems practice. These cognitive skills include questioning one’s own and others’ worldviews, recognizing them as partially true, not absolutely true, and understanding how they shape our perception of reality. These are the hallmarks of second-tier integral thinking. 

This integrative framing positions Systemic Inquiry across all four quadrants bridging subjective, intersubjective, objective, and systemic dimensions. Similarly, Critical Social Learning Systems (Blackmore, 2010) complements this approach by incorporating meditation as an "Inspirational Subsystem" and critiquing the impact of worldviews in creating dysfunctional social systems. Together, they embody a transformative, integrative approach to addressing complexity. 

The Systems Paradigm Emerges from Second Tier Worldviews

Wilber's critique overlooks the essence of systems approaches. Far from opposing reductionism, systems paradigms embrace it as a complementary tool within a holistic framework. Fritjof Capra, in The Systems View of Life (2014), exemplifies this integrated mindset, highlighting how systems thinking dissolves binaries to uncover deeper truths.  Fritjof Capra’s work grounds the systems paradigm firmly within the scientific framework—a strength often missing in Wilber's approach, which has faced criticism for lacking this connection. This grounding is vital for engaging those who might otherwise dismiss the paradigm outright. While this focus leans toward the right-hand quadrants, Capra’s exploration of Maturana and Varela’s Santiago Theory of Cognition reveals a more radical shift: the conception of life as defined by both internal and external processes through embodied cognition, thus explicitly including the subjective interior quadrants that Wilber claims is left out.

While Capra stays within the boundaries of science, he doesn’t dismiss the primacy of consciousness, as seen in Michel Bitbol’s guest essay, On the Primary Nature of Consciousness (Capra, 2014, p. 266) included in The Systems View of Life. 

In their work  “The Blind Spot – Why Science Cannot Ignore Human Experience” Frank et al (2024) point directly to the need to recover from the tendency to reify abstract concepts and reduce live experience to them, by remembering the primacy of lived embodied experience. This work springs from the systems paradigm’s Santiago Theory of Cognition and Merleau-Ponti’s phenomenology. Thus, despite Wilber’s claims, the systems paradigm unmistakably embodies second-tier integral thinking, fully integrating both subjective and objective dimensions of reality.
